for Clemens Hellsberg on his 60th birthday

“Wienerisch” is a miniature parody of the Viennese transition in popular music during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Waltz, march, and polka echo through this miniature, whose harmonic language and transitions lend it an air of absurdity. It was written for the 60th birthday of Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, then chairman of the Wiener Philharmoniker. It was also conceived as a small token of gratitude for the commissioning of the large-scale orchestral work “Time Recycling,” which the Wiener Philharmoniker have performed eleven times to date on three different continents.
